the only subspecies in Utah is A. s. emoryi the Texas Spiny Soft-shelled Turtle native to the Rio Grande and Pecos River in New Mexico and Texas, but introduced into the greater Colorado river system sometime in the late 1800's.
In Utah it is found in the Santa Clara and Virgin river drainages, both tributaries of the Colorado. the only other spiny softshell subspecies in the West is A. s. hartwegi the Western Spiny Softshell that is present in Eastern Montana, E. Wyoming, E. Colorado, and E. New Mexico.
