ID based on http://www.californiaherps.com/snakes/pages/h.o.klauberi.html. This snake lacked the continuous stripe through the eye from the nuchal blotches. It instead had a trio of nuchal blotches which were distinct from said eye stripe. The pictures show it in classic defensive posture.
