But thank you for making me re-read it...I first read it thinking it meant the scales closest to the rattle, but it does say "segment of the rattle," so I might need to change a couple of the entries.......
This is what I've been going by (from the www.californiaherps.com website): "The segment of the rattle closest to the body on an adult [Colorado Desert Sidewinder] is black. The Mojave Desert Sidewinder has a brown segment." Plus, I found these in Joshua Tree and I know they have both subspecies there. I have found the Mojave type there on another trip.
I'm pretty sure the subspecies is cerastes, in berdoo county
