By buddy caught this guy in front of his place. Here is what he told me when eh sent me the pic-
"Ya it was funny because we had a caravan of 40 retired people an they were going to kill it so I grabbed it up. He was pretty calm and I put him in a cooler. When I got him out he was mad and struck but no teeth."
A bus was stopped above his house so he went up to see what was going on. Gopher snakes from this area are very beautiful.
This was in Feb. 2014, I've found several bimaris surface active in Feb. further north-(in BCN around El Rosario and Catavina) seems to the norm to find them that way. As our gophers up here in So. Cal. can also be found surface active on warm winter days.
