We were on horseback & came upon this large Western Diamondback. Got the horses turned around & safely away from the snake. Then I went back with my camera to catch a few photos.

That's definitely crotalus ruber (Red Diamond Rattlesnake), not crotalus atrox. Aside from the clear photo IDs, this is also apparent from the habitat. In CA C. atrox is found almost exclusively in sandy flats. The elevation, 1650 feet, is also a bit high.
