Common along this dirt road. The snakes are able to burrow in the soft shoulders of this road that were created when the road was cut. Many rocks are strewn about the shoulders providing cover. The snakes have just begun emerging and were only found on one side of the road where the easiest burrowing is located and supposedly where they hibernate. The snakes come to the surface to get warm under these rocks that are exposed to full sun for much of the day. Later in the year, following dispersal, they will be found equally on both sides of the year (just a theory)
Redbellies, Eastern Garters and smooth green snakes are all found at this location with regularity, sometimes under the same rock.
