snake was seen alive, but was hit as i slowed to get it off the road.

it was a rat. quite sure of it. also, got word from friends who found an adult shed a bit more SW from this location and in sauk county.
I just saw that it is a yearling, how sure are you that it wasn't a fox snake?
This is a good find, I haven't heard of anyone finding them in Sauk county besides historical records. Too bad you didn't get a pic or specimen.
