Yup... leave it at desert spiny, till they get it figured out. jim
Thanks, Jim. I changed it to S. magister with no subspecies identified. I think that's what you recommended, right?
in California, S. m. uniformis from the southern Sonoran Deserts becomes S. m. magister - Purple-backed Spiny Lizard, and S. m. uniformis from the Mojave Desert, the Central Valley, the Coast Ranges, and the Great Basin Desert (including Nevada) which includes the former subspecies S. m. transversus, become S. uniformis - Yellow-backed Spiny Lizard. However, their sample size was very small which makes it difficult to determine the ranges of these new species in California.
I'd leave it at S.m.-- Desert Spiny... since uniformis isn't offered.
Not sure about distinction between purple-backed and yellow-backed desert spiny lizard, if that's a valid distinction.
