Yes, certainly P. gilberti. The purplish color is very interesting, however, I'd think east side Kern Co. off Hwy 178 should be regarded as P. g. rubricaudatus, not the nominate form.
east side off the 178. I questioned the purple tail as well and Robert Hanson assured me they were Gilberti.
The tail appears pink-purplish. Do you have other photos of this specimen? What side of the valley were you in Kern Co.?
