This individual was discovered during a search for short-horned lizards as part of a distribution and genetics study. Previously this area was thought to fall within the range of the pygmy short-horned lizard (P. douglassi), but morphology and genetic analysis show this and 5 other individuals found to be of the species Phrynosoma hernandesi.
