Many salamanders observed. Kids were trying to catch them and collect them in bottles. Tried to educate kids and parents. Limited success
Comments
You might be right. That hand was one of the kids. I do not touch any of the animals I photograph. It was difficult to get a good picture because it involves stepping on top of sensitive habitat, so I photographed one in the hand of the kid and one emerging from the mud. I will go back and try to get a better look.
These photos are very interesting. The one in your hand has membranes on the tail and exceptionally long limbs. To my knowledge, California Slender Salamanders hatch out looking like small but fully formed adults. I also can't think of any slender with limbs that long. This one is worth giving a second look at. Someone else would certainly know better than I but could these be juvenile newts that have just lost their gills?
